Old Country Road Elementary students in Hicksville recently had the opportunity to welcome author Mary Ellen Owens for special visit. The author captivated students with a read-aloud of her newest book, I Am Maleficent, bringing the story and its message vividly to life.
Inspired by Sleeping Beauty, the story centers on Maleficent, the famously fierce mistress of all evil, as she shares her rise and fall from her own perspective. Featuring her loyal raven companion and her well-known adversaries, Princess Aurora and Prince Phillip, this beautifully illustrated, not-too-scary tale is part of the charming “I Am…” Little Golden Book series, offering a unique introduction to beloved Disney characters.
In addition to the reading, Owens shared insights into her journey as an author, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the writing process and the inspiration behind her work. Students participated in a question-and-answer session, gaining a deeper appreciation for storytelling and the creative process.
