Our special guest, Arjun Shah, dazzled the students with science disguised as magic. Using Chemistry, Math, Physics, and Magnetism, Mr. Shah illustrated some basic laws of each science in an entertaining display of slight of hand. He then explained the science behind each trick. Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. The 2nd grade Environmental Scientists of the Future incorporated these three themes in their Earth Day presentation today. They demonstrated to their parents and teachers, the creative projects made from recycled materials such as plastic and cardboard. Being aware of environmental dangers, such as the amount of plastic in our oceans and pollution in our air, were demonstrated in several of the presentations. Parents came to view the works and walked around asking the students how they came up with their ideas about saving the world. A rendition of "It's A Wonderful World" ended the show much to the delight of all who attended. Please check out our Photo Gallery to view more of the displays.

BOOKS ALIVE 2019

Books Alive , a reader's theater presentation, has been an annual event st Fork Lane for many years. This year's production included, Anansi and the Talking Melon, I Know An Old Teacher, Listen Buddy and the Legend of Rock, Paper, Scissors. We would like to thank the parents, teachers, students and staff for their time and talents in making this production so entertaining. Can't wait for next year!

In an out of the ordinary laser, sign language , lecture and musical presentation , Fork Lane students learned about Teamwork. The characteristics of a good teammate are : Respect , Integrity , Generosity , Honesty , and Truth. Mr. Jaime of Prismatic Magic , our presenter , illustrated these characteristics using sign language and via laser light show and a musical medley , had all the students engaged and singing at the top of their lungs. As a prelude to the 5th grade field trip to see the musical "Aladdin", Mrs. Ruisi, Mrs. Competello and Ms. Iadevaia arranged for actor, singer dancer, Steven Geary to present a workshop in theatre. He entertained the students by performing a selection from West Side Story and proceeded to lecture the students in what it takes to prepare for a performance. The highlight of the presentation occurred when students were selected to participate in an actual scene study from Aladdin. They realized what it takes to create a character and follow direction. Madame Coley and Madame Iovine presented the Annual 4th Grade Wax Museum exhibition today. The gallery of celebrities ranged from sports figures, actors, actresses, past and present political figures and movers and shakers that have influenced the world in fashion, human rights, music and science. Guys and Dolls

The Hicksville High School drama club presented some vocal selections and scenes from their upcoming production of "Guys and Dolls". Under the guidance of Dena Civello and Michelle Shmuel, thew students entertained the Fork Laners much to their delight.Performance dates and times are, March 8th @ 7:00 March 9th @ 7:00 pm and March 10th @ 2:00 pm. Tickets are $10.00. Tickets for senior citizens are free for the Sunday Matinee.

First Grade 100th Day of school

Today, February 14, 2019, the First Grade here at Fork Lane celebrated the 100th day of school. They celebrated by making shirts and hats with "the 100th day of school" printed on their shirts and hats. The first graders also played connect the dots and puzzles and built a pyramid out of red solo cups.

READING ALOUD

Today, the Fifth grade students came into the Kindergarten classes and started World Reading Aloud Day by reading books aloud to all the kindergarten students. It was a nice opportunity for the Fifth Graders to show how wonderful it is to learn how to read aloud to a captive audience. I'm sure some of the Fifth Graders had the same feeling FIVE YEARS AGO.

Souper Bowl Food Drive

Beginning January 22, 2019, Fork Lane students began collecting cans of food for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Hicksville. In the lobby, boxes were decorated with the logos of the teams playing in the Super Bowl. Donations were placed in the box that the donor thought would win. Mr. Scardino announced the winning team - The New England Patriots - but truly this was a win/win for all.

TRIAL BY FUN

The Fork Lane 5th graders learned the ins and outs of the court system from The Honorable Judge Fernando Camacho. Using a script based on "The Boy Who Cried Wolf", the students played the roles ranging from judge to defendant as Judge Camacho identified all the participants and defined their roles in the mock trial. The children thoroughly enjoyed the interactive approach to this presentation. Thank you to Mrs. DiMartino, who was instrumental in arranging this assembly.

FORK LANE WINTER CONCERT 2019

A rehearsal for the Fork Lane Winter Concert was performed for a student audience yesterday . The third grade chorus , the 4th and 5th, grade band , orchestra and chorus performed musical selections ranging from "The Ode to Joy" to "Its a Marshmallow World" . The conductors , Laurie Haddock , Rick Enderle , and Olivia Rodriguez along with Philip Grusenmeyer , Supervisor of Fine Arts, were thrilled with the results of all the hard work and time the students put into the performance.

Jingle Bell Read- a-thon
The 5th grade students visited their kindergarten friends to celebrate picture books. Each 5th grade student selected a favorite picture book to share with their buddy. After reading together, the boys and girls created maracas as a culmination to reading the novel, Esperanza Rising. Everyone enjoyed spending time together.
