Olweus Anti-bullying Program Kickoff
02/12/2020
“Nice shoes,” one student said sarcastically to another who cringed and hurried past. “I like my shoes,” another responded as he got the dig. When the bully pronounced the same judgement on a third student passerby, an “upstander” student stepped in to support the victim. Did this happen in our schools? Yes, it did - as part of a skit designed to heighten awareness about bullying. Each of Hicksville’s elementary schools launched a new anti-bullying program in January 2020 - Olweus - to educate students about the harmful nature of bullying behaviors and, more importantly, to provide the tools students need to address situations in which they could become involved.

Telling Our Story: Fork Lane Elementary School
02/04/2020
“Fork Lane is like a family,” explained teacher Mrs. Nancy Ruisi. “It is our exemplary leader, Mr. Scardino, who has guided, nurtured and created this wonderful family made up of parents, teachers, staff and most importantly, our children.” Mrs. Ruisi, herself a former Nassau County Math Teacher of the Year, described Chris Scardino, Fork Lane’s educational leader for the past 16 years, as a compassionate role model.

OLWEUS IS IN THE BUILDING!
01/28/2020
On January 24th, Fork Lane sponsored an assembly with an anti-bullying theme. With the help of a motivational video by David Flood (Just Show Up) and the anti-bullying expertise of Scott Starkey and Eric Friedman, the message was sent to the students the bullying is not OK and if you are bullied there are ways to diffuse it and alleviate it. In a show of unity and amidst a sea of orange T-shirts with the motto “Just Show Up” on the back, the audience burst into a rendition Of “Our School is Bully Free” (sung to the tune of Uptown Funk with revised lyrics) which everyone enjoyed. Special thanks to the PTA, the anti-bullying committee, Mrs. Haddock, Mr. Stryker and all who helped put this event together. This event was truly impactive. IF YOU DON’T BELIEVE IT – JUST WATCH!

After reading the story, Balloons Over Broadway, by Melissa Sweet, the students of the Fourth Grade here at Fork Lane created balloons to be included in our Fourth Grade Thanksgiving Day Parade. The balloons were inflated with air and the students created a device to keep the balloon in the air as if it was inflated with helium. The whole school watched the parade from outside of their classrooms creating the scene of a street that the students marched down with their balloons.
