National Junior Honor Society Ceremony

Message from the Superintendent-Solar Eclipse

As you may already know, regions of the United States are gearing up for a special natural phenomenon: a full or partial solar eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024. In Hicksville, we anticipate a 90% partial solar eclipse from 2:11 p.m. to 4:36 p.m., with the peak occurring at 3:26 p.m. Please be aware that April 8, 2024, will proceed as a regular instructional day for students. We have provided our teachers K-12 eclipse-themed lessons and resources for the day.

Music program again receives national recognition

The Reptile Guy visits Lee Avenue

Roaches, turtles and tortoises, oh my! Students at Lee Avenue Elementary School in Hicksville recently sat in anticipation as John, The Reptile Guy introduced his reptiles. Throughout the hour-long program, students learned about various reptiles and each of the animal’s environments and the differences between herbivores and carnivores.

Non-Public Transportation Forms due April 1st

Transportation of non-disabled children to private and parochial schools outside the district is available up to a maximum of 15 miles. Each year requests must be made by April 1st, preceding the start of the school year, for those who wish to continue or begin transportation.

Students at Fork Lane Elementary in Hicksville were recently surprised by various guest readers. The theme of the Guest Reader Week focused on careers. Overall, nineteen guest readers participated by sharing a book relating to their career path. Some of the careers of the guest readers included nurses, police officers, a personal trainer, engineering, teachers and various others.

Seniors Named National Merit Scholarship Finalists

Hicksville High School seniors (l-r) Sidhh Agarwal and Jack Beaudette were named finalists in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program. They are pictured with Hicksville High School Principal Ray Williams and their guidance counselor Karen Felber. The two are among 15,000 students to earn the Finalist title. They will find out later this spring if they will be presented with a National Merit Scholarship Award.

Hicksville spins the wheel for the Pre-K Lottery!

Today, we utilized the wheel displayed on the screen to randomly select numbers. These numbers correspond to the numbers sent to families via email on Monday, March 18th. Rest assured, there is a spot reserved for each family on the list. The purpose of today's lottery is to determine the location where your child will attend based on your preferences.

Read Across America connects staff to students

My SchoolBucks Program Fee Update

Beginning March 7, 2024, the program fees for funding student meals through MySchoolBucks will increase from $2.75 to $3.25 for each credit/debit card payment and from $2.49 to $2.75 for each electronic check payment. This affects ala carte purchases only since all breakfast and lunch meals are free.

Middle School students make Lunar New Year crafts

Hicksville Middle School students recently recognized the Year of the Dragon by making lucky cat decorations, red envelopes, and lanterns in honor of this year’s Lunar New Year. Lunar New Year is one of the most important celebrations of the year among East and Southeast Asian cultures. Pre-K lottery deadline is February 9th

The Hicksville Public School District is offering a full day Pre-Kindergarten program for the 2024-2025 school year. To be eligible to participate, children must be 4 years of age prior to December 1, 2024 with a birthdate between December 2, 2019 and December 1, 2020.

HS Brings Kindergarten Monster Designs to Life

High School students in Ms. Porter's Lifespan Studies class partnered with East Street Elementary School classes after learning about Early Childhood. All kindergarten students designed a Monster Doll on paper and the high school students were able to bring their creation to life. Each Student received a hand sewn doll, their original monster doll design and a short story written by the HS students about their doll! Yesterday students delivered the dolls and the excitement and smiles of the kindergartners were the perfect way to cap off this great collaborative project!

Thankful and Grateful for our Hicksville Community

MS students share through creative writing

Seventh and eighth grade students enrolled in an elective creative writing class at Hicksville Middle School recently wrapped up their unit studying the writing techniques of mood, imagery, and suspense in a short horror scene with the emerging writers presenting an excerpt from their own story with fellow classmates. Additionally, the creative writing students created a cover to showcase their mastery of their writing in this genre.

Eighth graders attend assembly on addiction

Eighth graders at Hicksville Middle School recently attended an assembly featuring Addiction Research Scientist Dr. Stephen Dewey speaking on the science of addiction. Discussion topics included causes of addiction and the reasons for underlying disease progression, internet and video gaming addiction, vaping and the vast number of drugs and behaviors associated with this disease and more.

High School students performed “Mother Hicks”

Hicksville High School Repertory Company presented “Mother Hicks” by Suzan Zeder at the Charles “Chuck” Arnold Theater with three performances on Nov. 17 and 18. One of the main characters, a deaf boy named Tuc, helps to narrate the story is played by Hicksville junior John Ryan Chaplin who signs his dialogue while other actors on stage speak the words.

East Street students speak with local veterans

East Street Elementary School in Hicksville hosted local veterans representing all branches of the military on Nov. 20. The program gave fourth and fifth grade students the opportunity to participate in an hour-long question and answer session with the veterans.
